Community Send-Off Planned for Local Special Olympics Athletes
WELLSBURG, W.Va. — The community is coming together to celebrate two outstanding local athletes who are heading to the national stage.
A special send-off event is planned to honor Matteo Filippelli and Kay Ferrari, who have been selected to represent West Virginia at the 2026 National Special Olympics.
The event, scheduled for Sunday, May 31, will give residents a chance to show their support and wish the athletes well as they prepare to compete against some of the best competitors in the country.
The celebration will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Wellsburg Moose, where light refreshments will be provided.
Both athletes have dedicated countless hours to training and have earned their place through hard work, determination, and perseverance. Community members are encouraged to attend and help send them off with strong support from the Ohio Valley.
Organizers say the event is not only a celebration of athletic achievement, but also a chance for the community to rally behind two individuals proudly representing the Mountain State.
Residents are invited to come out, show their pride, and help give Matteo Filippelli and Kay Ferrari a memorable send-off as they head to the national competition.
