WHEELING, W.Va. — Another crash reported this week in the I-70 / I-470 interchange corridor near Elm Grove is raising fresh concerns about what many drivers say is becoming a dangerous stretch of highway that may need additional safety attention.
Over the past month, multiple accidents have been publicly reported in the interchange area, including crashes on I-470 near the split with I-70 and another recent incident on I-70 eastbound near mile marker 9, causing traffic slowdowns, lane closures and emergency response activity.
The interchange, where traffic merges and separates between Interstate 70 and Interstate 470 near Elm Grove, has long been considered a busy and sometimes challenging section of roadway due to heavy traffic flow, lane movements and the hilly terrain leading into and out of the corridor. Local drivers have frequently pointed to sudden merges, congestion and speed changes as concerns in the area.
While officials have not announced any new safety measures, the recent string of crashes is leading to renewed public discussion about whether additional traffic studies, signage, engineering improvements or enforcement could help reduce accidents in one of Wheeling’s busiest interstate corridors.
For now, drivers are being urged to use extra caution in the I-70 / I-470 interchange area as traffic continues to move through a corridor that many say is becoming a growing safety concern.
