Artists Invited to Capture Wheeling for America 250 Celebration

WHEELING, W.Va. — Artists from across the region will have the opportunity to showcase their talents while celebrating Wheeling’s history during Main Street to Mountains: A Wheeling Portrait, a community-driven plein air art experience and juried exhibition created as part of the city’s America 250 celebration.

On June 20, artists of all skill levels are invited to paint at designated locations throughout Wheeling, capturing the city’s landscapes, architecture, people, and unique character. Painting locations will include popular destinations such as Heritage Port, Centre Market, Wheeling Park, and Oglebay.

Registration for the plein air event is open through June 5 and costs $25, which includes a box lunch. All artwork created during the event will be eligible for inclusion in a juried exhibition and award competition.

Community members are encouraged to visit downtown Wheeling on June 20 to watch artists at work. An information tent at Heritage Port will be open from 7 a.m. to noon, providing maps of artist locations throughout the city.

The celebration continues with a juried gallery exhibition at the Wheeling Artisan Center. The exhibition will open with a public reception on July 2 and remain on display through August 31. Additional artists may submit works through an open call process, with accepted mediums including painting, mixed media, and sculpture.

The opening reception is free to attend and will feature award presentations, artist meet-and-greets, and a first look at the exhibition. Artwork sales will benefit participating artists, with 100 percent of sales going directly to the creators.

Award categories include:
• Best of Show – $500
• Second Place – $250
• Honorable Mention – $25
• People’s Choice Award

Organizers say the project offers a creative way for residents and visitors alike to connect with Wheeling’s identity while celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
