Orr as Commencement Speaker

BETHANY, W.Va. — Bethany College will welcome one of its distinguished alumni back to campus this weekend as veteran journalist Bob Orr delivers the commencement address to graduating students.

Orr, who spent more than four decades in broadcast journalism, built a nationally recognized career covering some of the most significant stories in modern American history. During his time with CBS News, he reported on major events including the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, and the operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden.

As he returns to his alma mater, Orr says his message to graduates will center on the importance of rebuilding personal connections in an increasingly divided society.

According to Orr, advances in technology have made communication easier than ever, but meaningful conversations and relationships have become more difficult to maintain. He believes Americans must work toward understanding one another despite differences in background, geography, politics, or culture.

Orr plans to encourage graduates to listen thoughtfully, engage respectfully, and help bridge the divisions that continue to shape communities across the country.

The commencement ceremony comes as Bethany College continues efforts to expand its academic offerings and attract new students. College leaders have introduced several new programs in recent years, including nursing, criminal justice-related initiatives, and a master’s degree program focused on AI-driven cybersecurity.

College President Dr. Jamie Caridi said enrollment momentum has been growing, noting that the institution welcomed its largest incoming class in more than 15 years last year and expects continued growth in the years ahead.

Graduates will receive their degrees during Saturday’s commencement ceremony as family members, faculty, and alumni gather to celebrate the Class of 2026.
