Wheeling University Receives $525,000 Gift to Support Scholarships and Endowment

WHEELING, W.Va. — Wheeling University has received a major financial contribution that will provide long-term support for students and strengthen the institution’s future through scholarships and endowment funding.

University officials announced a $525,000 gift from the estate of the late Sandra and Sydney Sonneborn of Wheeling. According to the university, Sandra “Sandy” Sonneborn, a 1960 graduate, requested that the funds be directed to her alma mater.

School leaders said earnings generated from a portion of the donation will establish scholarship opportunities for qualifying students from West Virginia, helping make higher education more accessible for future generations.

University President Dr. Dianna Vargo said the gift will help students pursue their academic goals while supporting the university’s mission of education, leadership, and service.

Officials noted that scholarship recipients will be selected through the university’s established review and application process.

In addition to funding scholarships, part of the donation will be placed into Wheeling University’s general endowment, providing ongoing financial support for the institution’s programs and operations.

University leaders said the contribution arrives as the school continues to build momentum and strengthen its foundation for the future.

Administrators expressed gratitude to the Sonneborn family, alumni, and community supporters who continue to invest in the university and its students.

The gift represents one of the larger recent contributions to the institution and is expected to have a lasting impact on both students and the university for years to come.
