MCMECHEN, W.Va. — A beloved community tradition is returning to McMechen this weekend as the McMechen Volunteer Fire Department hosts its annual Street Fair for the first time in more than two decades.
The event will take place July 10 and 11 at the corner of Ninth and Marshall streets, followed by the Hometown Reunion Dinner on July 12. It marks the first time the street fair has been held since 2004.
Families attending the event can enjoy classic carnival-style games, bingo, food, live entertainment, refreshments and activities for all ages.
One of the highlights of this year’s celebration is the return of the traditional street fair games that many longtime residents remember. Fire department members have spent months rebuilding and updating the games while preserving the nostalgic atmosphere that made the event a community favorite.
Several of the games have also been dedicated to longtime firefighters and volunteers in recognition of their years of service and the role they played in making past street fairs successful.
Retired McMechen Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Davis said the event is about more than raising money.
“We’re bringing back a tradition that has meant so much to this community,” Davis said. “We want to honor the people who helped build this event while creating new memories for today’s families.”
The weekend festivities will also include the annual Fireman’s Parade on Saturday, July 11. Parade lineup begins at 5 p.m. at Ice House Field.
Live music is scheduled both Friday and Saturday evenings from 8 to 11 p.m. New Age Adenas will perform Friday night, followed by Whiskey Rider on Saturday.
The Street Fair serves as one of the McMechen Volunteer Fire Department’s largest annual fundraisers, with proceeds helping support equipment, training and emergency services for the community.
Fire department officials encourage residents from across the Ohio Valley to attend, enjoy the festivities and help celebrate the return of a cherished McMechen tradition after 22 years.
