MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — Heavy rain and severe storms Tuesday evening led to rapid flash flooding in parts of Marshall County, prompting emergency crews to rescue a driver trapped by rising water.
According to Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Hart, some of the most significant flooding occurred in Glen Dale and along 21st Street in McMechen, where Little Grave Creek quickly overflowed.
Emergency crews responded after a driver became stranded in floodwaters near the Sun Valley Bridge. Firefighters from the Glen Dale and McMechen fire departments safely rescued the individual, who was not injured.
Hart said the driver reported there was little to no water on the roadway when he first entered the area, but floodwaters rose rapidly and surrounded the vehicle before he could safely turn around.
The storms also caused damage farther south in Pleasants County, where downed trees blocked several roadways and temporarily restricted travel.
Emergency officials reminded residents that flash flooding can develop with little warning during heavy rainfall and urged motorists never to drive through flooded roads.
Officials said water levels in the affected areas eventually receded, and the flooding had subsided by late Tuesday evening.
