OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — Pedestrian signals at a busy Wheeling intersection have been repaired following months of safety concerns from parents and nearby residents.
The crosswalk is located at National Road and Clarks Lane near Triadelphia Middle School and Steenrod Elementary School. Its pedestrian signals had remained out of service after being damaged by lightning last year.
The malfunction raised concerns during school arrival and dismissal times, when students and families regularly cross the heavily traveled roadway.
Brian Kucish, manager of West Virginia Division of Highways District 6, confirmed that the walk signals were repaired Tuesday.
A new traffic signal is expected to be installed at the intersection within the next one to two months. That work is included in a broader $6.8 million project to replace signals and signs along Route 40.
Transportation officials have not announced a completion date for the full project.
Several detours also remain in effect because of ongoing construction on the Washington Avenue Bridge. The Division of Highways expects the bridge to reopen sometime in October.
