OHIO VALLEY — After several days of warm, mostly dry weather, showers and thunderstorms are expected to return to the Ohio Valley late Monday and continue into Tuesday.
Forecasters say a cold front moving into the region will provide favorable conditions for storm development. Current forecasts indicate the first showers and thunderstorms are most likely to develop after 4 p.m. Monday, with activity increasing through the evening and overnight hours.
Periods of rain and multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected to continue into Tuesday morning and around midday. While the overall severe weather threat is expected to diminish Tuesday as the cold front moves through, a few stronger storms remain possible before conditions improve.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the Ohio Valley under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms on Monday, indicating scattered severe storms are possible.
The primary concern will be damaging wind gusts of 58 mph or greater, with eastern Ohio currently expected to have the greatest potential for stronger storms during the late afternoon and evening.
As the storms move east Monday night, they are expected to gradually weaken after sunset as daytime heating decreases.
Behind the cold front, cooler and less humid air will move into the region. High temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 70s through the middle of the week before gradually warming back into the lower 80s by week’s end.
