Moundsville residents are demanding answers after years of recurring sewer problems. Residents along Sixth and Seventh streets told Moundsville City Council that raw sewage has flooded their basements during heavy rainfall for approximately six to seven years. Mayor Randy Chamberlain said the city’s sanitary and stormwater boards oversee funding for projects addressing those issues and promised to attend their next meeting. Residents said they plan to attend as well.
Ohio arts funding is making its way to several local organizations. The Ohio Arts Council recently awarded more than $23 million, with Bellaire High School receiving $42,000 through a TeachArtsOhio grant. Historic Fort Steuben and organizations in Jefferson and Harrison counties are also among those receiving funding.
In Wheeling, demolition of the former Clay School building in East Wheeling has officially been completed ahead of schedule. The approximately 75,000-square-foot site sits across from the Chambers recreation complex ballfields and is now cleared for potential future development.
West Virginia officials are warning residents about a continued wave of scams. The state Attorney General’s Office received 176 scam complaints last month, including reports involving fake Medicare calls, robocalls promoting loans and funeral services, fraudulent invoices, lottery scams and Social Security threats.
A new health and education facility is now open on the Ohio University Eastern campus. The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center recently celebrated the opening of the ECO Center, which includes medical, dental and behavioral health services. The project was supported by a $3 million grant and is part of an effort to expand access to health care.
And the Supreme Court of Ohio has launched a new educational program aimed at sixth-grade students. “You Be the Judge,” developed with the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education, allows students to take the role of a judge in a school theft case and follow the case through different levels of Ohio’s court system.
