SMITHFIELD, Ohio — A serious two-vehicle crash on County Road 10 in Jefferson County Saturday night left multiple people injured and resulted in at least one death, according to initial incident reports.
The crash was reported around 8:24 p.m. near Smithfield. Early reports indicated at least one person was trapped inside a vehicle and had suffered a severe arm injury. A passenger was also reported to be seriously injured.
One of the vehicles, described as a Chevrolet Duramax pickup truck, went over an embankment. County Road 10 was shut down while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Air medical transportation was requested but was unable to fly because of weather conditions. At least three people were ultimately transported from the crash for medical treatment.
A crash reconstruction team was requested to respond shortly before 9 p.m.
Initial radio traffic also indicated authorities were investigating possible impairment involving a driver. However, River News has not independently confirmed a driver’s blood-alcohol concentration or whether criminal charges have been filed.
Later in the evening, authorities received confirmation that one person involved in the crash had died at the hospital.
The Ohio Investigative Unit was notified and an agent was requested. Investigators were also reported to be checking nearby businesses as the investigation continued.
Crews remained at the scene into early Sunday morning. Recovery of the pickup truck from the ditch proved difficult, and another towing company was requested shortly after midnight.
The identities of those involved and the condition of the other people transported have not yet been officially released.
This remains a developing story. River News will provide additional information as it is confirmed by authorities.
