Major Resurfacing Work to Begin on Wellesley Avenue in Steubenville

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Drivers in Steubenville should prepare for several weeks of construction as a major resurfacing project gets underway Monday along Wellesley Avenue.

The project will cover Wellesley Avenue from Bellevue Boulevard to Carnegie Avenue, continuing from Carnegie Avenue through Wellesley Extension to University Boulevard.

Crews will begin by removing the existing asphalt before installing a leveling layer. A new asphalt surface will then be applied later in the project.

The improvements are being completed with grant funding from the Ohio Public Works Commission. City officials say the roadway has needed significant repairs for some time.

Drivers should expect temporary closures as crews move through different sections of the project. Portions of Wellesley Avenue could be closed block by block, while Wellesley Extension may require additional closures because of its narrower roadway.

Parking restrictions will also be implemented in active construction areas. Signs are expected to be posted approximately 24 hours before work reaches a particular section, and residents are being asked to move their vehicles to prevent delays or possible towing.

The project extends beyond paving. Crews are also expected to make improvements to storm drains and curb ramps along the route.

Officials are encouraging motorists to use alternate routes when possible and asking residents for patience throughout construction.

Work is expected to continue over the next couple of months.
