COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio — Riverview Animal Protective League has received a donated building that will become the organization’s new home and provide additional space for animals removed from neglectful or abusive conditions.
The donation comes as shelters throughout the region struggle with limited space and an increasing number of animal welfare cases.
Riverview APL launched last year as a nonprofit organization focused on preventing animal cruelty in Columbiana County. Its humane agents continue to investigate cases involving neglect, abuse and animal hoarding.
The donated building was constructed in 1884 and has stood vacant since 2017. It previously housed several organizations and businesses, including the Salvation Army and a credit bureau.
Plans call for Riverview APL to use approximately 8,000 square feet across three floors. Once completed, the facility could accommodate dogs, cats, guinea pigs, birds and other small animals connected to humane investigations.
Board President Erica Richter said the added capacity will allow the organization to assist more animals while easing pressure on foster homes and other local agencies.
The building will require extensive renovations before it can open. An architect is expected to help develop plans needed for state licensing, while the organization is working with roofing companies to address the roof before other improvements begin.
Riverview APL is seeking financial contributions and assistance from skilled tradespeople, including contractors and electricians willing to donate labor.
The organization also plans to use the property for community events and hopes to establish a local 4-H group. Information about volunteering or contributing is available through Riverview APL’s website.
