MARTINS FERRY, Ohio — The former East Ohio Regional Hospital property remains unsold after a second public auction failed to attract a bidder Wednesday.
The Martins Ferry hospital has been closed since March 2025. According to information presented during the tax-sale process, the property has accumulated approximately $2.1 million in unpaid taxes.
The minimum bid for the property was set at slightly more than $2.6 million. No one submitted a bid at that amount during the latest auction.
The unsuccessful sale means the property will continue through the county’s tax foreclosure process. Under Ohio’s process for tax-forfeited properties, the county auditor is responsible for offering qualifying properties for public sale.
Officials involved in the sale indicated that the former hospital property will now move toward the land bank and county auditor for the next steps.
Another opportunity for the property to be purchased is expected through an auditor’s sale. Details about when that sale will occur and what minimum price, if any, will be required were not included in the information released Wednesday.
The future of the large hospital complex has remained uncertain since East Ohio Regional Hospital closed in March 2025. The lack of a bidder at the second auction leaves the property without a new owner as the county moves forward with the next stage of the process.
