Pennsylvania Officials Warn Drivers Ahead of Summer Travel Season

LAWN, Pa. — Pennsylvania transportation and law enforcement officials are reminding drivers to put safety first as summer travel ramps up across the Commonwealth.

Representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and AAA Central Penn gathered Tuesday to encourage motorists to put the phone down, drive sober, and slow down while traveling this summer.

Officials also highlighted Paul Miller’s Law, which takes effect on June 5, 2026. Under the new law, drivers convicted of using a hand-held device while driving will face a $50 fine.

The law is named in memory of Paul Miller Jr., who was killed in a distracted-driving crash. His mother, Eileen Miller, has become a national advocate for safer driving and joined officials at the event to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Mark Compton, Pennsylvania State Police Major Thomas Hertlein, and representatives from AAA Central Penn participated in the announcement.

State officials say the summer travel season brings increased traffic volumes and are urging motorists to stay focused behind the wheel, avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and never drive impaired.
