Ohio BCI Recovers More Than $500,000 for Victims of Cryptocurrency Scams

LONDON, Ohio — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has recovered more than $500,000 for victims of cryptocurrency scams, according to Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson.

The recoveries represent a significant milestone for BCI’s Electronic Financial Investigations Unit, which was established in the summer of 2024 to investigate digital financial crimes and help recover stolen cryptocurrency assets.

Wilson encouraged anyone who becomes the victim of a cryptocurrency scam to contact law enforcement as soon as possible, saying prompt reporting increases the chances of recovering stolen funds.

One recent investigation involved a victim who lost approximately $1.1 million in an investment scam. After the theft was reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center in December 2025, the case was referred to BCI for further investigation.

Investigators were able to trace a large portion of the stolen cryptocurrency through an international digital asset exchange. After obtaining a court order, authorities seized approximately $40,000 in recoverable assets and returned the money to the victim.

Officials said the investigation remains active, with more than $900,000 in additional recoveries still considered possible.

In addition to investigating financial crimes, BCI’s Electronic Financial Investigations Unit provides training and educational programs to financial institutions, law enforcement agencies, government organizations and groups focused on preventing elder financial abuse.

Law enforcement agencies needing assistance with cryptocurrency investigations can contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for support.
