OHIO VALLEY — Several stories are making headlines across the Ohio Valley today, including a guilty plea in a Weirton murder case, an ongoing string of copper thefts and changes ahead for students returning to school.
A Weirton murder case has ended with a guilty plea and a 30-year prison sentence. Jordan Pager pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend, Taylor Albert, avoiding a trial in the case. Prosecutors said the plea agreement came together last week with the victim’s family in agreement.
Also in Weirton, police are investigating a continuing string of copper thefts at the former Cleveland-Cliffs property. Authorities say at least 20 cases remain open, with suspects ranging from repeat offenders to first-time offenders allegedly targeting copper to sell to recyclers. Police are asking anyone who sees trespassers at the property to contact authorities.
Students returning to John Marshall High School will see traffic and parking changes because of construction on the new aquatic center. During drop-off and pick-up, only buses and vehicles with handicapped access will be permitted to use the high school’s main entrance. The changes take effect on the first day of school, Aug. 18.
Bellaire High School is beginning a new partnership with BSN Sports and Adidas. The partnership was announced Tuesday as the school prepares to outfit student-athletes with new uniforms and athletic gear.
Families in Ohio and Marshall counties also have an opportunity to receive help with back-to-school expenses. The Glessner Group donated $10,000 to the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley to provide qualifying families with $200 Ohio Valley Mall gift cards for school clothing. Applications are being accepted online on a first-come, first-served basis through next Wednesday.
And Town and Country Days is underway in New Martinsville for its 65th year. The celebration runs through Saturday and includes entertainment from Niko Moon along with the return of the demolition derby.
