Healthy Habits Can Help Students Stay Well This School Year

WEIRTON, W.Va. — As students across the Ohio Valley return to the classroom, health professionals are reminding families that several everyday habits can help children remain healthy throughout the school year.

Donald Boyles, a nurse practitioner with UPMC GoHealth, recommends providing children with a balanced diet, a nutritious breakfast and plenty of water. Adequate sleep is also important, with school-age children generally needing between nine and 12 hours each night.

Families are also encouraged to prepare for cold and flu season as temperatures begin to fall. Frequent handwashing and routinely disinfecting commonly touched surfaces can help limit the spread of viruses and bacteria at home and school.

Boyles said parents should keep a working thermometer available to monitor possible fevers. Any over-the-counter medication should be age-appropriate, administered according to its label and discussed with a child’s healthcare provider when necessary.

Health professionals also recommend keeping children current on vaccinations advised by their pediatricians, particularly if they have conditions such as asthma or diabetes that may increase the risk of complications from illness.

Seasonal allergies can create additional concerns as fall approaches. Ragweed pollen is a common trigger, and parents should consult a medical professional about appropriate options for managing their child’s symptoms.

Families should contact a healthcare provider when a child’s symptoms are severe, persistent or otherwise concerning.
