WEIRTON, W.Va. – Weirton City Council held its final regular meeting of 2024 Monday evening. It was a time for reflection as several council members and the mayor see their terms ending. They were honored in a special ceremony prior to the meeting.
Outgoing Mayor Harold Miller thanked the city’s residents for the opportunity to serve them and pointed to Weirton’s promise for a strong economic future, particularly with the development of the Three Springs Drive area.

Former Mayor Dean Harris will resume that role in January following his win in last month’s election.
Council approved a resolution to modify certain terms of the City’s Outstanding Tax Exempt Revenue Note with the Weirton Medical Center Project. Councilman Enzo Fracasso said he wanted to emphasize this does not cost the City of Weirton any money. It is basically an amendment changing the agreement name from Weirton Medical Center to WVU Weirton as the hospital joins the West Virginia University Health System.
Council also approved a resolution to allocate $350,000 toward the completion of the first phase of the Marland Heights Park Upgrade and Improvement Project. The pavilion will have ADA-compliant restrooms and there will be upgrades and improvements to the Brookline Street Playground. Other city recreation facilities requiring repair or upgrades may also be addressed with any remaining allocated funds. Matching funds and grants with remaining monies may also be explored.
The city will enter into a health insurance coverage agreement with Blue Cross/Blue Shield for city employees. Gap coverage to pay co-pays and other expenses will also be available.
Police Chief Charlie Kush said the Weirton Police Department responded to 588 calls last month and issued 52 citations.
City officials with partner with Form Energy Dec. 21 to bring holiday take-out dinners to local shut-ins and high rise residents.
