West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey to Hold Memorial Vigil for Charlie Kirk, National Memorial Also Scheduled

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, alongside state lawmakers and local faith leaders, will hold a memorial vigil in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The event, titled “Remembering Charlie Kirk – A Call to Courage,” is scheduled for Thursday, September 18, at 6 p.m. at the South Plaza of the West Virginia State Capitol, Riverside.

Governor Morrisey extended a public invitation via Facebook, encouraging residents to join him, local pastors, and representatives from Turning Point USA for an evening of prayer and remembrance.

The Governor will be joined by State Senator T. Kevan Bartlett (R-Kanawha), Delegate Jonathan Pinson (R-Mason), and other invited local officials and faith leaders. The vigil will feature a keynote address by Gov. Morrisey, along with remarks from the other guests reflecting on Kirk’s life and legacy.

Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was 31 years old.

The suspected gunman, Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old trade school student, was arrested two days later.

In honor of Kirk, Gov. Morrisey ordered flags at the West Virginia State Capitol to be lowered on September 12 and to remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment.

A national memorial service is planned for Sunday, September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, which President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to attend.
