NICHOLAS COUNTY, W.Va. — Dive teams continued their search early Monday for a missing miner trapped after flooding at the Rolling Thunder coal mine over the weekend.

According to state officials, the flooding occurred Saturday when a wall from a previously mined area gave way, releasing water into the active section of the mine.

The Rolling Thunder mine, owned by Alpha Metallurgical Resources, remains the focus of an extensive rescue effort. A third dive team arrived Sunday evening to assist in the search for the missing miner, believed to be located between 3,000 and 4,000 feet underground.

Authorities say crews are working around the clock under difficult conditions to reach the affected area.
