WV Public Employees Insurance Agency Approves Premium Hikes, Spousal Surcharge

WEST VIRGINIA — Following a series of public hearings, the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) has approved a three percent aggregate premium increase for state employees, along with a $200 spousal surcharge.

Teachers’ union officials criticized the increases, arguing it is unfair for first- and second-tier service personnel to pay rates comparable to those of school district superintendents.

The new rates are scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026. State officials say the adjustments are necessary to maintain the financial stability of the insurance program.
