JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – The Jefferson County Port Authority has been awarded more than $954,000 through the Ohio Department of Development’s Brownfield Remediation Program, with roughly $650,000 earmarked for two Steubenville sites, according to WTOV.
The first project targets the former Naval Marine Training Center on Cherry Avenue, which has sat vacant for at least three years and has drawn loitering and vandalism. Plans call for asbestos abatement and full demolition, with workforce development housing planned for the site afterward. The project is expected to create around 10 jobs. An environmental consultant will be brought on once funds are received, with demolition expected to take one to two years.
The second site, the former Johnny’s Tire Mart, will undergo an environmental assessment before any redevelopment moves forward. Clearing the property of legacy contamination issues is required before it can be repurposed.
