Steubenville Residents Voice Concerns as City Reviews Potential Oil and Gas Mineral Lease

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Discussion surrounding the future of city-owned mineral rights continued this week as Steubenville officials reviewed public feedback regarding a possible oil and gas leasing agreement.

The issue was addressed during Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting, where council members received an update on recent proceedings related to the potential leasing of mineral rights located beneath certain city-owned properties.

Law Director Costa Mastros outlined details from a public hearing that focused on the city’s efforts to explore bids from energy companies interested in developing those resources. The proposal has generated significant community interest, particularly among residents living near areas that could be impacted by future activity.

City officials reported that dozens of residents attended the hearing to share their perspectives, ask questions, and express concerns about how a lease agreement could affect nearby neighborhoods.

Council members emphasized that the review process remains underway and that no agreement has been finalized. Officials say additional discussions will take place before any decisions are made regarding the future of the mineral rights.

A special public meeting has been scheduled for June 11 at 6 p.m. to allow further discussion on the matter. Residents will have the opportunity to attend and follow developments as city leaders continue evaluating the proposal.
