Cadiz Mayor: No Discipline Planned for Police Chief Following Park Incident

CADIZ, Ohio — Cadiz Police Chief Ryan McCann will not face disciplinary action following a recent incident at Sally Buffalo Park that resulted in damage to a camper, according to Mayor R. Kevin Jones.

The mayor said he conducted a review of the situation after concerns were raised about an incident involving the removal of nuisance groundhogs in the park. During the response, a bullet reportedly ricocheted and struck a nearby camper, passing through the exterior and damaging property inside.

Jones said his review included police reports, witness statements, photographs and other available evidence. Following that review, he concluded that McCann acted within the scope of his duties and did not violate village or state laws.

According to village officials, McCann was responding to complaints about nuisance wildlife when the incident occurred. The mayor said there was no evidence of intentional misconduct or reckless behavior.

While no disciplinary measures will be taken, Jones acknowledged that property damage occurred and said the village intends to replace the damaged items.

The incident has also prompted village officials to review how wildlife complaints are handled moving forward. Jones said Cadiz plans to place greater emphasis on trapping and relocation methods rather than using firearms in populated areas when possible.

The issue is expected to draw additional discussion during the upcoming Cadiz Village Council meeting, where residents may have an opportunity to raise further questions.

McCann will remain in his position as police chief.
