WASHINGTON — The FBI has announced the arrest of the first individual featured on its newly launched “Most Wanted Fraudsters” list.
According to federal authorities, 47-year-old Said Abdullahi Ereg of Minnesota surrendered to law enforcement after being identified as a suspect in a large-scale fraud investigation.
Ereg faces federal charges including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
The FBI alleges Ereg fraudulently obtained more than $4 million through the Federal Child Nutrition Program by submitting false claims for meal reimbursements intended to support children in need. Investigators further allege the money was funneled through foreign accounts and used for personal expenses.
FBI Director Kash Patel called the arrest a milestone for the agency’s recently announced fraud initiative, which was developed in partnership with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
Federal officials say the investigation remains ongoing and indicated additional arrests could follow as authorities continue pursuing individuals accused of defrauding government programs.
The charges against Ereg are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
