JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio — The American Red Cross is encouraging more people to donate blood as the organization begins seeing a decline in donations heading into the busy summer season.
Officials with the American Red Cross of the Ohio River Valley say blood collections have fallen short of expectations in recent weeks, leaving the region roughly 1,000 units behind where it needs to be to maintain a healthy supply.
Summer is traditionally one of the most challenging times of the year for blood banks. Increased travel, vacations and outdoor activities often lead to fewer donations, while the need for blood remains steady and can rise due to serious accidents and medical emergencies.
Red Cross leaders say maintaining a strong blood supply is critical because a single trauma patient may require dozens of units of blood during treatment. Every donation has the potential to help multiple patients in need.
While the organization has not yet issued a critical blood shortage alert, officials are urging eligible donors to schedule appointments now to help prevent shortages later in the summer.
A community blood drive is scheduled for June 17 at St. Florian Hall, where residents will have an opportunity to donate and help replenish local blood supplies.
The Red Cross is encouraging anyone who is eligible to consider donating as the organization works to meet ongoing demand across the Ohio River Valley.
