One Injured, Dog Killed in Belmont County Apartment Fire

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — One person was injured and a dog was killed in an apartment fire Wednesday in Belmont County.

Firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex on Blaine Chermont Road, where they found a fire burning in one of the units.

According to Wolfhurst Fire Department Chief Matt Otto, one person was inside the apartment when the fire began. The occupant was rescued and transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.

Chief Otto said a dog inside the apartment did not survive the fire.

A nearby resident’s visitor, Chris Vesey, helped rescue the occupant before firefighters arrived. Vesey said he heard someone calling for help, removed a window air conditioning unit, unlocked the apartment door and, with assistance from another individual, pulled the victim from the burning unit.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading beyond the apartment where it started.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Wolfhurst Fire Department, Colerain Fire Rescue, Barton Volunteer Fire Department, Brookside Fire Department, Northwest Ohio Salvation Army Disaster Services and AEP.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials have not released the identity or condition of the injured occupant.
