WHEELING, W.Va. — Community members gathered in Wheeling Tuesday evening to welcome participants in Relay for America, a nationwide relay carrying a single American flag across the United States.
The event brought together veterans, runners and local residents outside Lowe’s in Wheeling, where supporters cheered on relay participants despite the high temperatures.
Relay for America aims to transport one American flag more than 3,000 miles from San Francisco, California, to Washington, D.C., with volunteers taking turns carrying the flag through communities across the country.
As the relay passed through the Ohio Valley, local participants joined the effort and celebrated the patriotic event alongside those making the cross-country journey.
Organizers have also made a live online tracker available, allowing supporters to follow the flag’s progress as it continues toward the nation’s capital.
