Sistersville Ferry’s Future Uncertain as City Explores Replacement Boat

SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. — The future of the historic Sistersville Ferry remains uncertain as city officials consider purchasing a replacement vessel following the loss of the ferry boat earlier this year.

The ferry, which carried passengers across the Ohio River between Sistersville, West Virginia, and Fly, Ohio, was taken out of service after it began sinking on April 9. The vessel was recovered from the river in May, where inspections found significant damage, including a destroyed rudder and damage to the starboard propeller.

City officials said repair costs would exceed the value of the boat, making replacement the more practical option.

According to Mayor Bill Rice, the city’s insurance settlement is expected to total approximately $162,000 after cleanup expenses are deducted.

Officials have identified two potential replacement boats being offered by a company in Pittsburgh. Each vessel carries a price tag of about $250,000, leaving the city with an estimated funding gap of roughly $90,000.

Mayor Rice said time is an important factor because suitable ferry boats are difficult to find, and city leaders hope to restore service as soon as possible.

The Sistersville City Council discussed the issue during its latest meeting but postponed a final decision. The matter is expected to return to the agenda when council meets again on July 13.

The Sistersville Ferry has long served as one of the few remaining ferry crossings on the Ohio River, connecting residents and visitors between West Virginia and Ohio.
