MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Moundsville residents are asking city officials to address recurring sewer backups they say have caused flooding inside homes during periods of heavy rainfall.
Several residents brought their concerns before Moundsville City Council on Tuesday, describing a problem they say has persisted for years and continues to cause damage when intense storms move through the area.
Resident Sondra Elson told council members that her basement recently filled with approximately one foot of water in a matter of about 10 minutes.
Elson said the issue is not isolated to her property, estimating that between 15 and 20 homes in her area could be experiencing similar problems.
Residents say particularly heavy downpours can overwhelm the system and cause water to enter their homes. For homeowners who are away when flooding occurs, the damage may not be discovered until they return.
Elson encouraged other residents experiencing similar sewer and flooding problems to report their concerns to the city’s water and sewer board. She said documenting how many properties are affected could help demonstrate the extent of the issue.
Those who spoke at Tuesday’s meeting said the problems began approximately seven years ago and are now seeking action from city leaders to determine what is causing the backups and what can be done to prevent additional flooding.
The complaints come as residents continue to deal with the potential for property damage during periods of heavy rainfall.
