Driver Reaches Speeds Over 100 MPH Before Officers End Pursuit on I-70

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — Law enforcement officers ended a pursuit Wednesday evening after a driver reportedly traveled at speeds exceeding 100 mph along Interstate 470 and Interstate 70 in Ohio County.

According to information reported from emergency radio traffic, Bethlehem Police initially attempted to stop a Volkswagen Jetta with Illinois license plates. The vehicle did not stop and continued eastbound, weaving through traffic.

The driver was reported traveling more than 100 mph while coming down I-470 before continuing onto I-70 East. Officers followed the vehicle as it passed Exit 5 and traveled up Two Mile Hill.

As the vehicle continued east, Pennsylvania authorities were contacted about the situation.

Radio traffic indicated that officers maintained sight of the vehicle while attempting to keep their own speeds reasonable. The Jetta continued past the Cabela’s area near Exit 10 and toward the Pennsylvania state line.

Shortly before 6:40 p.m., officers decided to terminate the pursuit. After officers stopped actively pursuing the vehicle, they reported that the driver continued operating recklessly, including attempting to travel between tractor-trailers and passing vehicles using the shoulder of the interstate.

Pennsylvania authorities had been notified of the vehicle and its direction of travel.

No information was immediately available regarding whether the driver was later stopped or identified. River News will update this story if additional information is released by law enforcement.
