Martins Ferry Police Increasing Enforcement of E-Bike and Scooter Violations

MARTINS FERRY, Ohio — Martins Ferry police are stepping up enforcement efforts following a rise in complaints involving e-bikes, scooters, and other motorized devices throughout the city.

Police Chief Vince West announced that officers will be taking a stricter approach toward traffic violations involving riders after reports of unsafe behavior on streets, sidewalks, and public property.

Officials say common concerns include riders ignoring stop signs and traffic signals, traveling against traffic, operating at night without proper lighting, speeding, and creating hazards for pedestrians and motorists.

The increased enforcement comes after recent crashes involving e-bikes and motor vehicles, raising concerns about rider safety and the potential for more serious accidents.

Under Ohio law, e-bike operators are required to follow traffic laws similar to those that apply to motorists. Police say citations, court referrals, and vehicle impoundments may occur when violations create a public safety risk.

The department is also reminding parents and guardians to ensure young riders are operating devices legally and safely.

Police officials say the goal is to improve safety and encourage compliance with traffic laws before additional accidents occur.
