COLUMBUS, Ohio — A proposal to enshrine hunting and fishing as fundamental rights in the Ohio Constitution is moving forward at the Statehouse.
Senate Joint Resolution 8, introduced in October by state Sen. Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City), aims to formally recognize both activities as protected rights for Ohioans. Supporters say the measure would safeguard long-standing outdoor traditions and ensure access for future generations.
To move ahead, the resolution must be approved by three-fifths of both the Ohio House and Senate. If it clears the legislature, the proposed amendment would appear before voters on the November 2026 statewide ballot.
If approved by the public, Ohio would join several other states that have added similar protections to their constitutions in recent years.
