OHIO & WEST VIRGINIA WEIGH GAS TAX CUTS AS PRICES CLIMB

OHIO VALLEY — With gas prices climbing toward $5 per gallon in parts of the region, lawmakers in both Ohio and West Virginia are exploring potential gas tax relief — but no official cuts have been approved as of May 13, 2026.

Ohio Proposal Faces Pushback

In Ohio, State Representative Ty Mathews (R-Findlay) has introduced House Bill 850, which would temporarily reduce the state’s motor fuel tax by 50% for three months.

Under the proposal:

  • Gas tax would drop from 38.5 cents to 19.25 cents per gallon
  • Diesel would drop from 47 cents to 23.5 cents per gallon

However, Governor Mike DeWine has expressed opposition, stating that gas tax revenues are essential for maintaining roads, bridges, and infrastructure across the state.

Supporters of the bill argue Ohio’s reported $1.2 billion revenue surplus could be used to offset the loss and provide relief to drivers.

West Virginia Considering Special Session

In West Virginia, State Treasurer Larry Pack is calling for a special legislative session to consider temporarily suspending the state’s gas tax.

According to the Treasurer’s Office, the plan would:

  • Use surplus state funds to backfill road funding
  • Provide temporary financial relief to residents facing high fuel costs

Some lawmakers are also discussing a market-based trigger, which would suspend the tax if gas prices remain above a certain threshold.

Rising Costs Driving Action

Gas prices across the Ohio Valley are averaging $4.50 or higher, with some areas nearing $5 per gallon, prompting increased pressure on state leaders to act.

At this time, no gas tax reductions have been implemented in either state.
