AEP Reports Higher Profits as Customers Continue Facing Rising Electric Bills

COLUMBUS, Ohio — American Electric Power is reporting strong financial growth in 2026 as customers across Ohio and the Ohio Valley continue seeing higher monthly electric bills.

According to the company’s May 5 earnings release, AEP posted $874 million in first-quarter profits, up from $800 million during the same period in 2025. Operating earnings also increased to $891 million, reflecting continued expansion across the utility’s service territory.

Company officials say much of the growth is being driven by rising energy demand from data centers, industrial operations, and other large-scale energy users. During the first quarter alone, AEP signed agreements totaling 7 gigawatts of new energy load demand, with projections now reaching 63 gigawatts by 2030.

To support that growth, AEP announced a $78 billion capital investment plan — one of the largest infrastructure spending initiatives in company history.

Infrastructure Expansion Planned

AEP says the majority of the investment will go toward expanding transmission lines, upgrading aging infrastructure, and developing new power generation facilities, including natural gas plants.

The company currently operates one of the nation’s largest transmission systems, including more than 2,100 miles of ultra-high-voltage transmission lines.

Why Electric Bills Are Increasing

As AEP reports higher profits, many customers continue asking why electric bills are also rising.

Utility experts point to several major factors:

  • Utilities recover infrastructure and upgrade costs through customer rates
  • Large new energy users, including data centers, require significant grid expansion
  • Regulated utility companies are allowed to earn returns on investments approved by state regulators

Under the regulated utility model, infrastructure investments are often passed along to customers over time through rate increases and related charges.

AEP Addresses Affordability Concerns

AEP says it is taking steps to help manage long-term customer costs while continuing to expand the grid.

According to the company, up to $16 billion in projected cost offsets could reduce future impacts on ratepayers. Officials also said federal grants and loan programs are helping lower some project expenses.

CEO Bill Fehrman said the company remains focused on balancing affordability with reliability and long-term energy growth.

Impact on the Ohio Valley

For customers across Ohio and neighboring states, the outlook remains mixed.

AEP says grid upgrades and reliability improvements are intended to support future economic growth and increased industrial demand. However, customers may continue seeing higher electric bills as those infrastructure projects are funded over the coming years.

Bottom Line

AEP is investing billions of dollars to expand and modernize the electric grid as energy demand rapidly increases. But under the regulated utility system, many of those costs are ultimately recovered through customer rates — helping explain why company profits and electric bills can rise at the same time.
