AEP Says Big Power Users Will Help Offset Up to $16 Billion in Grid Costs

American Electric Power says large industrial and high-demand electric customers will help cover the costs associated with growing energy demand, a move the company says is designed to protect residential customers from major increases tied to grid expansion projects.

According to AEP, new agreements and updated rate structures are expected to offset up to $16 billion in costs for existing customers over the life of the contracts. Company officials say the approach is intended to ensure that businesses with significant power demands contribute to the infrastructure investments needed to support future growth.

AEP says the additional investments are aimed at improving grid reliability while limiting the financial impact on everyday residential customers.

The company also reported a 10% reduction in outage times over the past year across its operating companies. Officials say new technology, including drone inspections, is helping improve efficiency while reducing maintenance costs.

In addition, AEP says it has secured $315 million in federal grants and a $1.6 billion federal loan to support transmission projects. The company estimates those efforts will save customers nearly $600 million while helping strengthen the electric grid.

AEP refers to the initiative as “Powering Fairness,” saying the goal is to balance economic growth, reliability, and affordability as energy demands continue to increase.
