CAMBRIDGE, Ohio — A local citizens group opposing a proposed large-scale data center development in Guernsey County recently hosted a public meeting to discuss concerns about the project and its potential impact on the region.
According to organizers, more than 50 residents attended the meeting at the Red Roof Inn in Cambridge. The gathering was organized by We The People of Guernsey County and focused on a proposed 425-acre data center project that was first discussed during a June 9 meeting with the Guernsey County Commissioners.
The group, which operates under the name “Guernsey County & Ohio: Data Center Developments,” says it was formed to share information with residents and organize opposition efforts related to the project.
County commissioners have also expressed concerns about the proposal. In a statement released June 16, commissioners said they oppose the project in its current form and believe additional information is needed regarding potential economic, environmental, and community impacts.
Officials have noted that a specific location for the proposed data center has not been publicly disclosed. Commissioners have also stated that Ohio law limits the county’s authority over private property transactions and development decisions in unzoned areas.
During the meeting, residents and organizers discussed concerns including the possible loss of farmland, increased demand on water resources, impacts to wildlife habitat, and strain on local utility infrastructure.
Guest speakers included Leslie Menges, who has been involved in efforts related to data center development issues in Lorain County, and J.C. Shively, Director of Business Development and Planning for Tuscarawas County.
Organizers said they intend to continue working with local officials while encouraging residents to participate in future public discussions regarding the proposed development.
The group also announced plans to gather signatures for a statewide petition concerning data center development through Conserve Ohio.
Public records maintained by the Ohio Secretary of State indicate that We The People of Guernsey County is not currently registered as an Ohio nonprofit corporation and is not recognized as a federal 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
At this time, no formal development application has been publicly announced, and details regarding the project’s exact location remain unknown.
