Massive Fire Destroys Sawmill Collection Building in Guernsey County

FAIRVIEW, Ohio — Firefighters from multiple departments responded Monday evening to a large fire at a sawmill in Londonderry Township that destroyed a sawdust collection building and caused limited damage to the main mill structure.

According to the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the scene after reports of a structure fire at the facility.

When firefighters arrived, they found the sawdust collection building fully engulfed in flames. Fire had also begun spreading to portions of the main sawmill building near the roofline.

Crews initially used a deck gun mounted on Engine 95-3 to quickly knock down the bulk of the fire before firefighters advanced into the sawmill to prevent the flames from spreading further.

A large water supply operation was established to support firefighting efforts. Tankers from several neighboring departments assisted with transporting water, while a fill site was set up at a nearby pond to keep crews supplied throughout the incident.

Emergency medical personnel from Quaker City and Old Washington were also on scene to provide rehabilitation services for firefighters working in the heat and smoke.

Officials said the sawdust collection building was completely destroyed. The main sawmill sustained only minor fire and water damage.

Fire officials credited sawmill employees with helping reduce the extent of the damage by closing the building’s doors and keeping them shut until firefighters arrived, helping slow the spread of the fire.

No injuries were reported among employees or emergency responders.

In total, 24 firefighters from the Fairview, Antrim, Quaker City, and Old Washington fire departments responded to the incident.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
