BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — Belmont County has officially joined the Stepping Up initiative, a national effort focused on improving mental health treatment for individuals involved in the criminal justice system and reducing repeat offenses after release.
The Belmont County Commission approved a resolution Wednesday to become a Stepping Up county, expanding local efforts to address mental health and substance use disorders among inmates.
Officials with the Mental Health and Recovery Board said the program aims to connect incarcerated individuals with treatment, housing resources, support services, and other tools that can help them successfully transition back into the community.
County leaders noted that many inmates struggle with mental health or substance use issues, making access to treatment a key component of reducing recidivism and improving public safety.
The initiative will build on services already available at the Belmont County Jail, including an on-site social worker and treatment programs provided through Coleman Health Services.
Officials say joining the Stepping Up network will also provide access to additional training opportunities, resources, and grant funding to strengthen mental health care efforts within the local jail system.
