Historic Centre Foundry Site Sold, Plans Announced for Data Center and Energy Campus in Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. — A historic industrial property in Wheeling could soon be transformed into a major technology and energy hub following the reported sale of the former Centre Foundry site in Warwood.

According to a recent announcement shared by energy infrastructure firm Stokes Energy, Silicon Foundation has finalized the purchase of the approximately 15-acre Centre Foundry property at 74 Warwood Avenue. The site includes more than 60,000 square feet of industrial space and an existing electrical substation that developers say will help accelerate redevelopment efforts.

The project calls for a phased redevelopment of the former steel foundry into a campus focused on data center operations, energy storage, and power infrastructure.

Developers say the first phase, targeted for completion in late 2026, would include a 10-megawatt modular data center system combined with battery energy storage and on-site backup power generation. A second phase proposed for 2027 would expand the facility to as much as 100 megawatts.

Stokes Energy said it is expected to serve as the project’s prime engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, overseeing electrical and civil engineering design, interconnection studies, procurement, construction management, commissioning, and long-term operations.

The Centre Foundry property has a long history in Wheeling. The foundry traces its roots to 1840 and operated for nearly two centuries before shutting down in 2023, resulting in the loss of dozens of jobs. The facility produced gray iron castings and served numerous industrial customers throughout its history.

While the sale and redevelopment plans have been publicly announced by project stakeholders, local permitting, regulatory approvals, utility interconnection reviews, and construction timelines will ultimately determine when work begins and how the project progresses.

If completed as proposed, the redevelopment would represent one of the largest technology-focused industrial investments announced for the Wheeling area in recent years, repurposing a historic manufacturing site for data center and energy infrastructure development.
