TRIADELPHIA, W.Va. — In the wake of the devastating June 14 flood, a local animal shelter is expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of community support and now has a new priority: finding forever homes for pets displaced by the disaster.
“The community support has been overwhelming since the flood happened,” said Dave Campbell, Manager of the Ohio County Animal Shelter. “Thankfully our building received no damage, and all of the animals are doing very well.”
While the shelter itself was spared from structural harm, outdoor areas weren’t as fortunate. “We have a few outdoor construction projects that will need to be done, such as our dog yard needing to be flattened and re-seeded after the flood damage,” Campbell explained.
In the days following the flood, donations of pet supplies poured in from every direction.
“Our small building was overwhelmed with the amount of supplies we were given—not just from local residents, but from local businesses and even out-of-state members of our animal-loving community,” Campbell said. “We are thankful to the entire community who sent us donations of food, litter, toys, and treats.”
As of now, the shelter is at capacity for physical donations and is encouraging people to offer donations directly to flood victims and to other local shelters in need.
“At this time, we are completely full of any physical donations we need for our animals,” Campbell said. “We have been asking the community to donate to other victims of the June 14th flood, or to other animal shelters in the area that could use the donations. I have also been asking our cat lovers to donate food and litter to Back Street Cat Rescue in Ohio, as they have helped us many times by taking in cats and kittens from our area.”
With shelter space full and more than 10 animals taken in after the flood, the focus now shifts to adoption.
“All we can ask for at this time is to find loving homes for our cats and dogs,” Campbell said. “In this time while our community is healing from the flood, we hope that we can find the perfect home for all of our animals here that we care about so much.”
