Ohio & West Virginia Lawmakers Consider Gas Tax Relief as Fuel Prices Rise

As fuel prices continue climbing across the region, lawmakers in both Ohio and West Virginia are weighing potential gas tax relief measures aimed at easing costs for drivers.

Gas prices throughout the Ohio Valley are averaging around $4.50 per gallon, with some stations approaching the $5 mark, increasing pressure on state leaders to respond.

Ohio Proposal Would Temporarily Cut Fuel Taxes

In Ohio, Mike DeWine is pushing back against a proposal that would temporarily reduce the state’s fuel tax.

State Representative Ty Mathews, a Republican from Findlay, introduced House Bill 850, which proposes cutting Ohio’s motor fuel tax in half for a three-month period.

If approved, the plan would lower:

  • The gasoline tax from 38.5 cents to 19.25 cents per gallon
  • The diesel tax from 47 cents to 23.5 cents per gallon

Supporters of the measure argue the temporary reduction would provide immediate relief to consumers struggling with rising transportation costs. Advocates also point to Ohio’s reported $1.2 billion budget surplus as a possible way to offset lost transportation revenue during the tax holiday.

Governor DeWine, however, has voiced concerns about the proposal, saying gas tax revenues play a critical role in funding road maintenance, bridge repairs, and infrastructure projects statewide.

West Virginia Leaders Discuss Possible Suspension

In West Virginia, Larry Pack is calling for a special legislative session to consider temporarily suspending the state’s gasoline tax.

According to the Treasurer’s Office, the proposal would use surplus state funds to help replace lost highway revenue while offering short-term financial relief for residents.

Some state lawmakers are also discussing the possibility of creating a market-based trigger system that would automatically suspend or reduce the gas tax if fuel prices remain above a certain threshold.

No Changes Approved Yet

As of May 13, no gas tax reductions or suspensions have been approved in either Ohio or West Virginia. Discussions remain ongoing as lawmakers continue evaluating the potential economic impact and funding concerns tied to the proposals.
