OHIO VALLEY — Leadership changes in public safety and a major community celebration are making headlines across the Ohio Valley.
The City of Steubenville has selected Captain Wesley Crawford as its next Chief of Police. Crawford will succeed Chief Ken Anderson, who is retiring after years of service to the department. City officials say the appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Steubenville Police Department.
Across the river in Ohio County, longtime Emergency Management Director Lou Vargo is also preparing to retire after 37 years of service. As he steps away from the position, Vargo is urging local leaders to continue investing in public safety, warning that eliminating key positions—such as a deputy emergency management director—could leave the county less prepared when disasters strike. Although Vargo believes the role is essential, county officials currently have no immediate plans to fill the deputy position.
Meanwhile, the City of St. Clairsville is inviting residents and visitors to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a weekend full of patriotic activities. The celebration begins Friday, June 26, with free hot dogs and birthday cake, and continues Saturday with the Spirit of America Parade, family-friendly events, and a fireworks display at dusk. Organizers are encouraging the community to come together for what is expected to be one of the city’s largest summer celebrations.
